Giardia parasite. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a Giardia sp. protozoan (blue),a parasite of the intestinal tract. Intestinal microvilli are seen as the green dots at lower right. Infection causes giardiasis, which causes abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhoea. The parasite attaches itself to the inner lining of the intestines using a sucking disc made up of short cilia (hairs),seen as the dark blue lines in the region running from centre to upper right. The cell contains two nuclei, seen as the paler ovals in the cell body. Giardiasis can be treated with antibiotics or antiprotozoal drugs, such as metronidazole.
