Giardia intestinalis parasites (previously G. lamblia). Light micrograph of the vegetative stage of the protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis (lambliasis),an intestinal disorder in humans. The parasite can exist for months in the environment as a cyst. It is ingested with water or contaminated food. The adult form matures in the small intestine where it attaches to microvilli lining the intestine wall. More cysts are produced, which pass out of the host in the faeces to continue the life cycle. The symptoms of infection include abdominal cramps, swelling and diarrhoea. Magnification: x800 at 35mm size | |
