False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Leishmania tropica,a parasitic flagellate protozoan that causes the disease leishmaniasis in humans. The parasite assumes different forms throughout its life cycle in humans & the sandfly. This image is of the amastigote form which parasitises human macrophages, with its rudimentary, retracted flagellum (left). The amastigote form is ingested by the sandfly, transforms into the promastigote form in the insect gut & replicates by binary fission. Human infection occurs through a sandfly bite.
