Sugar cane mill mechanism. 19th century artwork of gears, cogs and chains forming the mechanism of a sugar cane mill. The use of gears and cogs allows power to be efficiently moved through a mechanism with minimal loss of energy. The mill is being used to shred and then crush sugar canes to extract the sweet, sugary juices. Further refining is then carried out to produce the sugar.
