Radiumgraph. Contents of a purse shown on a radiumgraph,an early type of photograph, taken by Marie Curie before 1904. It was taken by exposing the purse to the highly radioactive element radium above a photographic plate. A key can be seen on the left side of the purse. The radiumgraph was taken for comparison with X-ray imaging. However the radiumgraph's poor contrast and lengthy exposure time meant that eventually X-rays became the dominant technique for medical imaging. Radium was discovered by the French scientists Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898 | |
