18th century eclipse sermon. Page 3 of a sermon preached by Joseph Burroughs to the Society for the Reformation of Manners at Salters-Hall,London,UK,on Monday 28th June 1731. The Society for the Reformation of Manners was founded in London in 1691 with the aim of suppressing profanity,immorality,and other lewd activities,in particular brothels and prostitution. Eclipses were often viewed as omens from God and as a sign of distaste towards the behaviour of Man.
