Historical solar system. Page from Thomas Wright's book An Original Theory of the Universe, published in London in 1750. The diagram shows the known solar system (centre right) at the time, which is missing Neptune,Uranus and Pluto. Three cometary orbits are also seen. The one labelled 75.5 years is that of Halley's Comet. In this book Wright also gave the first correct explanation of the appearance of the Milky Way as being due to our immersion in a layer of stars. He proposed that the Sun is one of many stars orbiting around a Divine Centre and that the stars were distributed either in thin, concentric, spherical shells or in annuli like the rings of Saturn | |
