Solar eclipse. Five drawings made by Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) of solar features and the total eclipse of 7 July 1842 (at centre). At upper right are sunspots, relatively cool, dark areas of the sun associated with intense magnetic storms. Their darker centres (umbrae) and lighter outer areas (penumbrae) can be clearly seen in the figures at upper and lower left, and lower right. In the central drawing, the moon is the dark disc completely obscuring the Sun's visible surface (photosphere),allowing the fainter corona (outer atmosphere) to be seen. Prominences of glowing gas are being emitted from the Sun at its lower and upper left, and also from its lower right | |
