Illustration showing a gager at work. The gager (or gauger) was an early type of weights and measures official. His job was to tell people how much a cask or barrel would contain. To this end he used a simple set of measuring rods and a pair of dividers. His job was important because most trade in foodstuffs was conducted by volume, not weight. The illustration comes from the Vysirbuch by J.Kobel dated 1515 | |
