This expedition,which sailed from Madras,India,aimed to measure the characteristics of pendulums in various heights and locations,including the equator. Mount Ophir,near the equator,was one of the navigational landmarks used. The expedition was led by the British astronomer John Goldingham (1767-1849),head of the Madras Observatory. The measurements allowed values such as the density and size of the Earth to be determined with improved accuracy
