19th century cryogenics technology. A vacuum cooling device, invented by a Professor Leslie. The device is shown whole at bottom, with a cross section above centre. A manual pump was used to evacuate any of the six sample areas. The sample would be placed under one of the glass containers, either the domes seen in the main drawing,or the bell jar or cylindrical jar shown at left. An arrangement of valves on the table decided which areas would be evacuated. As the air was evacuated, the vapour pressure of the sample dropped and evaporation occured, cooling the sample. The drawings at top show the results of some experiments | |
