Lithgow water tunnel
Lithgow water tunnel. Researcher (lower right) standing on the Lithgow water tunnel. This water tunnel,built in the UK in around 1932,was used to test propeller designs for cavitation. Cavitation is the formation of bubbles in a liquid due to changes in pressure,as happens in water being churned by a propeller. Studies of cavitation aim to improve propeller design to reduce this unwanted effect. Photographed in the Ship Division of the National Physical Laboratory,Teddington,UK
