19th century diver. Historical engraving of a 19th century diver. He is wearing a one-piece suit of rubberised cloth and a brass helmet with glass portholes. These diving suits were known as "heavy-footers" as the boots had lead weights built in. These were to help stabilise the diver on the sea bed. The diver was permanently linked to the surface by an umbilical air supply fitted at the waist, and also by the winch cables (upper right) attached at the back. The diver would be lowered to,and raised from the sea bed using these cables. The diver is also carrying a lamp | |
