Arctic exploration. Illustration of a line of ships sailing through a clear passage between ice floes. This formed part of Sir John Ross' attempts to find the Northwest passage,a navigable water- way between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans around the northern tip of Canada. Ross (1777-1856) explored the sides of Baffin Bay and sailed down Lancaster Sound,a westerly passage. He finally turned back, thinking that he was approaching a mountain range. Later expeditions found that these mountains must have been a fog bank or mirage. Ross made further expeditions in 1829 and 1850. Image of Ross' vessel with seven whaling ships in June 1818.
