Turbinia. World's first turbine-powered boat, the Turbinia. Designed by British engineer,Sir Charles Parsons (1854-1931),the Turbinia's first trials took place in 1894. The boat was powered by an axial-flow turbine of 1.49 megawatts (2000 horsepower) which revolved at 2000 revolutions a minute. After overcoming technical problems,Parsons displayed the Turbinia, uninvited,at the great Naval Review of 1897 at Spithead. At this Review the Turbinia achieved the unheard of speed of 63.5 kilometres per hour (34.5 knots). After this performance, orders for turbine powered ships followed quickly for both military and civilian uses | |
