Olympic. People on four decks from the ocean liner Olympic,a ship built to the same design as the Titanic (a 'sister ship'). The ships were 268 metres long and weighed 67,000 tonnes, making them the largest ships at the time. The ships' hulls had 16 watertight compartments and many people believed that this made them unsinkable. However, during her first voyage the Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912 which punctured 5 compartments. The ship sank in three hours. There was only enough lifeboats for about half the passengers and crew. Many of the life- boats were only partly filled when launched and just 705 people from the 2207 on board survived | |
