Hydrogen balloon. Historical artwork of a procession,following the safe landing of the first passenger-carrying flight of a hydrogen balloon. Professor Jacques Charles,French physicist and inventor of the balloon,and Nicholas Robert took off from the Tuileries Palace in Paris,France on 1 December 1783,watched by a crowd of 80,000 people. The balloon travelled for 43 kilometres before landing briefly. Robert got out and Charles ascended again to become Europe's first solo balloonist.
