Drawing of the first parachute descent in the UK. The parachute was invented by the Frenchman Andre- Jacques Garnerin (1769-1823) who made this descent in Grosvenor Square,London,in September 1802. Garnerin made the first parachute jump on October 22nd 1797 in Paris. He reached an altitude of about 800m in a balloon and then he cut the rope which held the balloon and the basket together. The basket went down hanging from a parachute. He used the same technique for the jump illustrated here | |
