Parachute jump. Engraving of the first recorded parachute descent. The Frenchman Andre-Jacques Garnerin (1769-1823) designed the parachute and made the first jump on 22nd October 1797 over Paris,France. He was carried aloft beneath a balloon to an altitude of about 800m and then released. The parachute deployed successfully and Garnerin landed safely. In Garnerin's design, the parachutist occupied a basket, unlike modern designs where the parachutist is held within straps. Garnerin's parachute descents became popular as a variety act | |
