Scientific balloon. Engraving of researchers in a scientific balloon used in high-altitude research,before take-off. This flight,on 17 August 1852,lasted 2 hours 51 minutes,reaching an altitude of 5852 metres and covering a distance of 40 kilometres. At the maximum height,air was sucked into vacuum tubes for later analysis and the temperature was measured as being -14 degrees Celsius. The researchers noted the height of clouds and that it was not difficult to breathe. The flight started from Vauxhall Gardens in London,UK.
