Steam railway. Artwork of the first train to run on the Stockton & Darlington Railway,Britain, the first successful steam railway. George and Robert Stephenson had designed the railway, and it was George who opened the line by driving his engine, the Locomotion, along it in September 1825 with passengers carried in coal wagons. The Stephensons became involved in the railway in 1821. They carried out a survey which improved the proposed route of the line. The lines was laid with recently-developed wrought-iron rails. The locomotives and rolling stock were built by the Stephensons from 1823. Artwork of the Locomotion crossing Skerne Bridge | |
