Early typewriter. Early typewriter being used by a young woman. The modern typewriter was devised by Christopher Latham Sholes with Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule in Milwaukee,Wisconsin,USA,in 1867. Their "literary piano" was bought by gunsmiths Remington and Sons of Ilion,New York,USA,and marketed from 1874 under the name 'Remington Model 1'. In 1878 Remington and Sons patented an improved version which was the first to feature lower-case as well as upper-case (capital) letters. Photograph of C.L. Sholes' daughter in about 1870 | |
