Cartwright's engine. Historical artwork of Cartwright's alcohol engine that was patented in 1797. Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823) was an English inventor and clergyman. He patented a power loom for weaving cloth in 1785 and a wool combing machine in 1789. This engine used alcohol vapour instead of steam to drive the piston (centre),which turned the wheel.
