Bamboo water wheel. A nineteenth century engraving of a rural scene in China, showing a bamboo water wheel used for irrigation. The outer rungs on the wheel consist of hollow bamboo shoots that fill with water when immersed in the river and then empty onto the platform at the top. The wheel could raise 300 tons of water every 24 hours. This engraving was first published in a book in 1843 | |
