Steam turbine, historical artwork. This is an artist's impression of what a turbine described by Hero of Alexandria may have looked like. Hero was a Greek mathematician and inventor in the 1st century. The hollow ball (lower centre) had paddles attached around its circumference. It was turned by steam that was produced underneath it. The turning motion could then be utilised, for example to mill grain. Artwork taken from History of wonderful inventions,London,1849 | |
