Microwaved food contamination test. French fries cooked in a microwave oven during an experiment into the contamination of food by chemicals in its packaging. The box interior has been sprayed with a marker chemical at a concentration similar to that of the contaminants found in the box; the purple colour is used as a visual aid to show that the spraying has been even. Once cooked, the food is liquidised & the chemicals are extracted using a solvent. The contaminants are organic chemicals from the packaging's ink. Research has shown that designs which improve airflow through the packag- ing reduce food contamination. Photographed at the Central Science Laboratory in Norfolk,UK | |
