Paper manufacture. Technician showing two sheets of paper before (dark) and after bleaching. The paper has been manufactured with a new process called ASAM (Alkaline Sulphite with Anthraquinone and Methanol) which is based on chlorine-free bleaching and should not cause any air or water pollution. ASAM has been developed in an integrated project which is aimed at testing the performance of sweet sorghum plants for bioenergy purposes. These include the production of pulp (a moist mixture of cellulose fibres),from which paper is made, derived from the bagasse (dry pulp) of sweet sorghum plants. The project is funded by the Commission of European Communities | |
