Antimalarial drug research. Distillation apparatus used to extract potential new antimalarial drugs from the plant Artemisia annua. Malaria remains prevalent throughout the tropics in spite of the World Health Organisation's attempts to control the disease. A key problem is the evolution of new strains of the malarial parasite (Plasmodium sp.) that are resistant to current antimalarial drugs like chloroquine. The search for new drugs involves screening biochemical compounds extracted from plants known to have antimalarial properties, such as Artemisia annua. The apparatus seen here is used to isolate the compounds before subjecting them to scientific tests | |
