Road construction. Laying of the second course of a road. Asphalt (black) being laid on top of the aggregate sub-base (pale layer under vehicle left) of a modern road. The sub-base consists of crushed stone and concrete which is compacted by rolling. Bituminous asphalt is delivered by lorry, and is spread over the surface of the sub-base using the vehicle at left. The asphalt layer is then flattened using a roller (right). Eventually a top wearing layer will be added to complete the road.
