Flywheel at a sewage works. This is part of the Crossness Pumping Station. A flywheel is a rotating wheel used for storing kinetic energy. It would be powered by a piston engine. The Crossness Pumping Station was constructed as part of the redevelopment of the London sewage system. It was designed by Joseph Bazalgette who also designed the London sewage system between 1859 and 1865. The pumping station opened in 1865 and closed in the 1950's but has since been restored and is now open to the public as a tourist attraction. Photographed in Crossness,London,UK | |
