Traditional lime kiln. Man mixing limestone (calcium carbonate) and anthracite coal in a traditional lime kiln. The limestone is heated by the coal until it dissociates to form lime (calcium oxide) and carbon dioxide. Lime may be used to make cement or converted to slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) an alkaline substance used in farming to neutralise acid soils. Photographed in Turkey | |
