MODEL RELEASED. Bridge failure test. Engineer operating equipment to test the load-bearing properties of a section cut from a small forest bridge. The hydraulic ram (centre) increases the load on the concrete slab. Sensors continually observe the deformations right up to the failure point. Mathematical analysis allows the behaviour of the entire bridge to be modelled. It was found that the 6-metre-span bridge, which dates from the 1950s,can still carry six times the weight limit imposed on it. 800 similar bridges are found in forests throughout the UK.
