Rusting car wreck and dead trees. Rust is a hydrated iron oxide produced by a chemical reaction between the iron metal in the car and the water and oxygen in the air. Rust is more porous and brittle than iron. This car was 13 kilometres from the volcano Mount St Helens when it was destroyed in the 1980 eruption. The blast area covered 600 square kilometres.
