View of the cockpit of a flight simulator. The simulator, seen here approaching London Heathrow airport, can imitate all aspects of flight in a Boeing 737-300 airliner. Five computers run the simulator, creating the motion, vision and sound cues associated with flight between any of 20 airports in the main memory. The system is accurate enough for all training and routine checking of crew performance to be conducted in the simulator. This releases real aircraft in the fleet for revenue-earning flights. The simulator is considerably cheaper to use for training than a real airliner, and can imitate a variety of in- flight emergencies | |
