Urban monorail passing over traffic. This is the Wuppertaler Schwebebahn monorail. The line runs approximately 14 kilometres between Elberfeld and Barmen in the Wupper valley and was opened in 1901. The track is a type of monorail suspended at least 8 metres over streets and the River Wupper. It comprises an inverted T-shaped rail from a lattice frame raised over the ground on an A or inverted U shaped support. The line's electric trains hang from two pairs of wheels which run on the single rail. The trains draw current from a conductor rail parallel to the monorail. It is also known as the Langen Suspension Railway. Photograhed in Elberfeld,Germany | |
