StratSat airship behind the cannisters of helium gas used to fill it. This is a 12-metre-long prototype of the unmanned StratSat telecommunications airship. StratSat will remain for up to 5 years at a height of 20 kilometres, above commercial aircraft and weather disturbance. Staying in the same position,it will handle huge numbers of mobile telephone calls, reducing the need for telephone masts. StratSat could also provide high-speed Internet services and direct broadcast television,or be used for surveillance. Its power and propulsion will come from solar panels and a diesel engine. StratSat,made by the Advanced Technologies Group,England, will be 200 metres long | |
