StratSat airship. Fish-eye lens view of a 12- metre-long prototype of the unmanned StratSat telecommunications airship. The actual airship will remain for up to 5 years at an altitude of 20 kilometres, above commercial aircraft and weather disturbance. Staying in the same position,it will handle huge numbers of mobile telephone calls, reducing the need for mobile telephone masts. It could provide high-speed Internet service and direct broadcast television,or be used for surveillance. Kept aloft by helium, its power and propulsion will come from solar panels and a dies- el engine. StratSat,made by the Advanced Technol- ogies Group,England, will be 200 metres long | |
