A mid-air photograph of a sport skydiver descending under a ram-air parachute. The square parachute is shaped like an aerofoil when it is deployed, using the forward speed of the parachutist to keep it inflated. The parachute generates lift, and is highly manoeuvrable, allowing very precise landings to be made with the minimum impact force. Just behind the main canopy can be seen the small drogue canopy, used to drag the main parachute from the skydiver's back-pack during deployment | |
