Crash test dummies. Two generations of child crash test dummy: Pinocchio (at left) from the mid 1960s,and a modern Q6 dummy. Pinocchio, who was designed for sled impact tests,is made from wood, with steel joints and a leather-covered body. Q6,a dummy of a 6-year-old child, was built to test safety in both side and front vehicle impacts. Its numerous sensors measure the forces it experiences during an impact. Pinocchio has a strain gauge in his head to measure impact forces, and realistic joint movements. He was designed by Dr Freek Bastiaanse at TNO,the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research,in Delft | |
