Falkirk Wheel. This is a type of lock that moves boats between the Union Canal (not seen) and the Forth & Clyde Canal (bottom centre). These canals, disused since the 1960s,originally had 11 locks over a distance of 1.5 kilometres, which connected the two waterways. The aerial extension to the Union Canal (upper right) along with the wheel were constructed as a rotating boat lift. The wheel consists of two gondolas, each able to lift 300 tonnes, that lift or lower boats the 35 metres between the two canals. Photographed in Falkirk,Scotland | |
