Cardiff barrage lock. The lock is opening to allow boats to enter a bay. At lower right is a hydraulic mechanism. The turquoise structures are bascule bridges which enable transport to cross the barrage when the lock is closed. The locks allow boats to navigate between the Severn Estuary and Cardiff Bay. The Cardiff barrage was constructed to serve as a flood defence structure and also to create a permanent freshwater lagoon. Photographed at Cardiff Harbour,Wales | |
