World Wide Web. A computer scientist updating pages on the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The Web is a global network of over 10,000 host computers connected by the Internet. Users of the Web are able to navigate between computers to access data by using a program called a 'browser'. Each site has a server,a computer connected to the Internet which directs users to the documents and data they wish to access. Data on the Web are held in hypertext files; text documents with other data (such as pictures or links to other documents) embedded in them. The Web was created at CERN,and started services in 1989 | |
