Osborne 1,the first portable computer. It was launched in 1981 by the Osborne Computer Corporation (OCC). The 12 kilogram machine had a four megahertz processor and 65 kilobytes of memory. The keyboard could be folded up and attached to the front of the computer for ease of carrying. The monochrome screen was five inches (12.5cm) across and could display 24 lines of 52 characters. The computer was briefly popular before competitors began marketing significantly better models. OCC's premature announcement of the impending release of a far superior machine led to customers delaying their purchase of the Osborne 1,which contributed to the company's demise in 1983.
