Enigma machine rotor. Enigma was a German electromechanical encryption machine used in World War 2. The wires (green, right) made an electrical connection between the keyboard, where messages were typed in,and a display where the encrypted version of each letter entered would light up. The rotor turned with each keystroke, meaning that each letter could be enciphered as any other, except itself. The wheel with letters (left) was used in the initial setup, which varied daily.
