A silicon neuron,or "neuromime",which mimics the electrical behaviour of real nerve cells. As an integrated analog silicon circuit (a "chip"),it operates in real time, and signals are graded & continuous. The parts of the circuit seen here model sodium & potassium currents found in nerve impulses. Tiny amounts of energy are used. This "neuromime" resembles a nerve cell so closely that it even adapts to incoming stimuli. Application of such neuron models will improve understanding of brain function. A group of such circuits will have the potential to interact like biological nervous systems. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size | |
