Italian one euro coin,coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Euro coins and banknotes became legal tender across most of Europe on 1st January 2002. The coin shows a drawing made by the Italian scientist and artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452- 1519). Each country in the European Union (EU) has its own designs on one side of its coins.
