Encoder disk, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is an electro-mechanical part used in robotics, computer peripherals (such as computer mice and track balls) and photographic lenses. It works by translating angular motion of a shaft into digital code. The infrared light emitting diodes (on one side of the encoder) are detected by a sensor on the other. Holes in the disk create pulses of light that vary in frequency. This acts as a feedback mechanism regarding its speed and position. Magnification: x50 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
