Skyworker robots. Computer artwork of planned NASA Skyworker robots constructing a space facility in near-Earth orbit. Two types of robots are seen. Six-armed robots (one at top left) are crawling on the girders being moved by the main Skyworkers (yellow). The Skyworkers are designed to function in the microgravity conditions of orbit. They grip and walk, with a hand-over-hand bipedal gait,on the structure that they are constructing. A dedicated control system balances the load during walking. Multiple joints allow flexibility (11 degrees of freedom) when fixing a load. Skyworker was developed at the Robotics Institute,Carnegie Mellon University,Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,USA | |
