Coal-fired power station. View of the Romerbrucke coal-fired power station reflected in the River Saar at night. One chimney can be seen at upper centre. This station burns coal to drive a steam turbine and generate electricity. Burnt coal is a source of carbon dioxide,a cause of global warming. However this plant uses fluidized bed technology which makes the coal burn much more efficiently. The process involves powdered coal being given the characteristics of a fluid (fluidized) by the upward passage of gas. Photographed in Saarbrucken,Germany | |
