Radioactive waste handling. Technician using remote welding arms to seal waste in double- walled metal containers. He is shielded from the waste by three feet of leaded glass. Liquid waste containing caesium-137 and strontium-90 is pumped into the Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility (WESF) through doubly-encased pipes. It is converted to solid form and then the containers are stored under 4 metres of water. Photographed at 200-area,Richland,Washington,USA | |
